Eat, drink and be scary

‘This Halloween the most popular mask is the Arnold Schwarzenegger mask.  And the best part?  With a mouth full of candy you will sound just like him’

Yes, it is nearly Halloween!!  And oh, I am so excited, because this Friday I am going to do some ‘Trick or Treat’ activities. I have never done Trick or Treat, because we do not really celebrate Halloween in my country. I know Halloween and Trick or Treat are for kids but what the hell I just want to give it a shot. The only problem is that I do not really know how it works. I know that you need to dress up like a freak (I will wear my friend’s clothes)  and then you need to ring the doorbell and scream trick or treat... but imagine a not so skinny/small bloke standing in front of your door, saying with a deep and muscular voice ‘ Trick or Treat’. That might become a bit awkward.... and what do I do when they won’t give me any sweets, because I am not sure if there needs to be a consequence... and  if there needs to be one, what do I need to do?

Oh it is so hard to be scary and get some sweets. I hope I find somebody who wants to ‘Trick or Treat’ with me. The only thing is, when I ask a girl ‘Do you like to Trick or Treat with me?’  Some just laugh and think I am joking, but others think I am being dirty. Anyway, I am going to do my best to find a partner in crime, so if you have any suggestions, please comment on my blog ;)....

Oh two years ago, by the way, was my first Halloween experience and I was dressed up as Sweeny Todd. It was so cool, and some people thought I was bleeding for real, which I was... I kept bleeding, kept, kept bleeding for love... (Leona Lewis?)

Deadlines WHELP!

This day might be a day of change (YES WE CAN!). I never started a blog writing about deadlines and today… I am going to talk about how important it is to meet deadlines!  ‘Yes, I am shocked as well!!!

I just got a call from my Dutch friends and they missed their *&^%()*& flight! They didn’t leave their house on time and got stuck in traffic… You know probably know a guy or girl who is always late for classes, never hand in assignments or if he does, its spot on time, or just a bit too late. My friend is one of them and he showed today that deadlines are not only important at work or university, but significantly in your own life! Anyway, he has a seat on a plane which leaves in about an hour, but why did you miss your flight?!?

Three of my mates are coming over this week, but to be fair, I don’t have any money and have very little time,,, so I might need to skip a few appointments or borrow some money, but we are definitely going to P.A.R.T.Y. They are staying over at my place, meaning that the number of housemates nearly doubles. So that means free accommodation for them, so I assume that they buy me a NON ALCOHOLIC ;) beer and a pizza! Or maybe even two, but they are Dutch so they might not do it as well.

Oh btw, I am soooo tired, I worked on an award ceremony yesterday from 9 AM ‘til 7 PM. I stood outside for nearly all of those hours and it was freezing! I was helping out with the award ceremony and I raised some money for the alumni fund (spam: more information about alumni on our website ;)). And the day before yesterday, I gave tours at the university to teenagers who were amazed by the buildings. Anyway, the end of my blog is near so I will end with a quote of one of students: ‘I did not expect the university to have computers, because the buildings look so old’.

Many Questions. No Answers

Normally I try to write blogs, which are entertaining, informative or funny. To be fair, I wrote a blog ticking those boxes or at least one of them, but my mood changed drastically today. I did not find it appropriate to send something in, which made it look like nothing happened. What I am going to bring you is sad news, which affected my entire year, its students and many others.
Today, 11 October 2010, the head of business school came into the lecture theatre and brought us shocking news. Jose Gallego, for some a classmate, for many a good friend, was found dead.
Nobody knows what happened, nobody knows why, but all we can say is that he will be missed a lot. He was a nice and friendly guy. He loved joking around, was a great student and ... I don’t really know what to say.... it is a sad day.
Rest in Peace, Jose Gallego

Stuck on a page...

Before I started writing this blog, I had to touch wood, because you never know what is going to happen. Anyway, as far as I am aware, my life is going like cream! Nice and smooth! Last Saturday, we had a couch surfer from America in our house! We didn’t know her, but she liked our profile so much that she decided to stay at our place. You might be thinking, why would you host a random person in your house?! That is not safe! And you’re not acting responsibly! I must admit that this was my first reaction as well, but this is the story behind it...
I have a profile on this ‘couchsurfing’ website, where people can read my profile and see my pictures. It is just like your Face book page, but differs in the details. On this site are only people who love travelling, but are too student-ish (poor) to afford accommodation. However, here you are able to get in touch with all kinds of travellers around the world, willing to offer you a place to stay for free or give you tours around their city! In return they go to other (or your) city and sleep for free on somebody else’s couch and because of the pictures you can see and the profile you can read, you can make a judgement about that particular person. I know more about some couch surfers than I know about my friends... To be fair, how much do you know about your classmate, sitting at the far back of the class room? Besides this, people are able to write references about the hosts and guests. This results in opinions about that particular person, if he was friendly, boring, weird or smelly... More importantly, nobody can change the references except the person who wrote it, so you can get a fair opinion about a host or guest...
So thanks to this you are able to experience the world cheaply and develop your knowledge about other cultures and countries! That makes life pretty good, and why wouldn't it be? I'm a student, after all. Even though, coursework deadlines are standing ready around the corner to scare me, there are plenty of times when I have a laugh or two, but I want to have those moments abroad too! I might plan a trip to Spain or Italy or New York or...
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page” but be careful if you go couch surfing, it is better to go together with a friend!
